Ion District

Anchored by its flagship building (The Ion), Ion District has set a firm foundation to be the innovation corridor of Houston.

Our charge was to create an identity system for a mixed-use district spanning ten years and twelve blocks of development, helping guide and inspire partners and visitors through the exciting, evolving, and often ambiguous landscape of “innovation.”

The linework of the identity system is built around concepts of connection and pathways—those critical moments of connection that link people, ideas, and opportunities.

A comprehensive RFP template was produced to assist with development and leasing opportunities within the District.
Inside a new building with plenty of room to grow tenancy, the Ion team needed a way to easily inform visitors and tenants of the building’s levels, spaces, and amenities.

We produced a series of building and floor plan illustrations to improve the wayfinding experience for building visitors and assist the real estate team in cataloging leasing opportunities.

A District-wide map showcases the 14 parcels of developable land and the four completed buildings: the Ion building, Greentown Labs, a multi-level parking garage, and Stuff'd Wings.
As the first and only building built for the District, a sense of place was lacking for those unfamiliar with the developments being made in and around the Ion.

To combat this, we created a flexible and modular system of panels to outfit a series of windows (previously used as showcase windows for the building’s historic predecessor), surrounding the Ion HQ.

In the center of the Ion building, the District team wanted to outfit a showroom for pitching potential tenants, investors, and developers.

Embodying the brand ethos of connection and building pathways between people and place, we designed and fabricated custom signage that weaves around the room, doubling as a series of shelves, and directing attention to the renderings and three-dimensional model that showcases the District’s planned phases and exciting potential.

Since the launch of their brand in 2021, Ion District has leased over 90% of the Ion, including tenants like Microsoft, OpenStax, CommonDesk, and Chevron. Using the brand system we created, the Ion’s programming team has been able to promote and host over 200+ events, further fostering a community of collaboration and innovation in the city of Houston. Most notably, the City of Houston has honored the District’s claim as its innovation corridor—making May 9 a city holiday as “Ion Day” in Houston.
